Check the head unit before downloading
- Record the actual Android version, unit model and firmware. Android Auto is a phone-projection protocol, not proof that the head unit runs Android.
- Confirm the manufacturer permits APK installation. For DiPlay 0.2.20, the minimum is Android 7.1; vehicle support on Android 7.1–8.1 remains unconfirmed.
- For USB, check a data-capable cable and port with the required host behaviour. For wireless, check Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and the selected hotspot or Wi-Fi Direct path.
Built-in app, DiPlay or AutoKit dongle?
| Option | What it needs | Cost and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Preinstalled receiver, such as ZLink/TLink | The exact unit’s supported app and activation | Ask the seller; a random APK cannot supply a missing licence or hardware. |
| DiPlay | Compatible Android receiver with APK installation | Free public preview; no external CarPlay dongle required, but no universal compatibility guarantee. |
| AutoKit | Matching CarlinKit Android-receiver hardware and app | Hardware purchase; follow the exact model’s requirements and environment check. |
Install and make the first connection
- If a built-in receiver works, follow its manufacturer’s iPhone pairing instructions first.
- For DiPlay, check compatibility, download the reviewed upstream APK and install it on the head unit, not on the iPhone. Follow the installation guide for permissions.
- Close other projection apps. Connect by USB data cable or follow the chosen wireless method with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Start with navigation and music. Keep experimental vehicle features off until the basic connection works; ordinary CarPlay does not require ADB.
Test sound, calls and reconnection separately
- Check picture, touch input and navigation prompts with music playing.
- Make and receive a call, then try Siri. Hearing music does not prove the microphone or call routing works.
- Restart the head unit and check reconnection. Repeat with the same app, firmware and iPhone/iOS versions.
- If something fails, note the connection method and symptom. Compare published reports or save a diagnostic report before changing versions.
Older Android and support limits
Android 7.0 and earlier cannot use the current official APK. Community ports have their own builds and evidence; a lower minimum Android version is not proof of a complete working session.
Upstream maintenance focuses on BYD. Other units may run the app, but brand-specific fixes and BYD HUD/steering integrations are not promised. DiPlay is not Apple-certified; its experimental authentication and acceptance after future iOS updates remain uncertain.
Do you need a dongle or an Android phone?
The Android device here is the car receiver; the phone is an iPhone. For an Android phone, choose an Android Auto receiver instead. A CarPlay-style launcher or screen-mirroring app is not evidence of an actual CarPlay receiver.
If your head unit is locked or runs a different operating system, return to the older-car options. Check matching hardware, a replacement stereo or a portable display rather than repeatedly installing APKs.
